Student Services

Wayne County School System Mission:
Our mission is to empower all students to reach their highest levels of achievement.

Attendance

Every child of school attendance age should attend school on a regular basis in order to maximize his/her educational opportunities. Students who are absent from school may never regain some of the experiences that take place during their absences.

Homeless

As provided in the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, homeless students are defined as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

Student Handbooks

Student handbooks are provided to each student at the beginning of the school year. Please review for valuable information including the Student Code of Conduct, dress code, legal notices, etc...

Student Records

Permanent records for each student actively enrolled in the Wayne County School System are housed at the student's school of attendance. For questions or to request information, contact Jan Ryals, Student Records Coordinator: 1359 W. Orange Street, Jesup, GA 31545; mcounts@wayne.k12.ga.us;  (912) 810-7635 ext. 22 phone; or fax (912) 810-7638.

Mandated Reporter

The law O.C.G.A 19-7-5 (a copy of the law is at the bottom of the page) was put into place to provide for the protection of children whose health and welfare are adversely affected and further threatened by the conduct of those responsible for their care and protection. It is intended that the mandatory reporting of such cases will cause the protective services of the state to be brought to bear on the situation in an effort to prevent further abuses, to protect and enhance the welfare of these children,
and to preserve family life wherever possible.

An oral report shall be made immediately, but in no case later than 24 hours from the time there is reasonable cause to believe a child has been abused, by telephone or otherwise, and followed by a report in writing, if requested, to a child welfare agency providing protective services, as designated by the Department of Human Services, or, in the absence of such agency, to an appropriate police authority or district attorney.

There is a 24-hour hotline for reporting child abuse 1-855-422-4453.

Volunteers as Mandated Reporters

O.C.G.A. 19-7-5 now holds volunteers in schools, hospitals, social agencies, or similar facilities responsible for the same child abuse reporting requirements as employees. As a mandated reporter, you are legally required to report suspected child abuse or maltreatment if you encounter it in your role as a volunteer.

Resources for Mandated Reporter Training

Mandated Reporter Training is available through The Governor's Office for Children and Families (GOCF). GOCF has partnered with Care Solutions, Inc. to make this valuable online training available for free any time or day that you may want to use it.  It is one hour of your time to learn how to better recognize the indicators of abuse and neglect, understand your role in responsible reporting, and identify the groups of children that may be at a higher risk of being abused or neglected.  Please click here to access information on Mandated Reporters and training: Critical Links in Protecting Children in Georgia.
